Brown noise for focus

Brown noise is a steady, low-frequency sound. Some people use it while reading, studying, or working because a continuous background can make changing sounds around them less prominent.

Why steady sound can feel less distracting

Speech, footsteps, traffic, and notifications attract attention partly because they change. A consistent sound can reduce the contrast between a quiet baseline and those interruptions. Brown noise places more energy in lower frequencies than white noise, producing a deeper rumble with less high-frequency hiss.

Whether that background helps depends on the listener, the task, the room, and the volume. Other people focus better in silence.

What the evidence says

Direct research on brown noise and concentration is limited. Personal reports do not prove a cognitive benefit, and findings about white or pink noise cannot show that brown noise works the same way. Brown noise should not be presented as a treatment for ADHD, anxiety, or another condition.

For an independent clinical overview of the evidence and its limits, see the Cleveland Clinic’s guide to brown noise.

How to try it during work

  • Choose one task and try a short session so you can tell whether the sound is helping or competing for attention.
  • Keep the volume low enough that it sits behind the task rather than becoming the task.
  • Adjust the tone if the deepest frequencies feel heavy or the higher frequencies feel distracting.
  • Compare it with silence and stop using it when it makes concentration harder.

Using Brown FM for a focus session

Brown FM generates continuous noise on your iPhone without a repeating track. Adjust depth, texture, space, and movement, save sounds for different routines, and control playback from the app, widgets, Control Center, Siri, or Shortcuts.
